Get ready to run, walk, and make a difference! Join us for our Annual AKT Spring 5K/10K at the scenic Mount Vernon Trail as we raise funds for the Samuel Kwarteng Memorial Scholarship. This non-competitive, family-friendly event is open to all fitness levelsβ€”walkers and runners are all welcome and encouraged to participate!

All revenue and donations will directly go towards funding the 2026 Samuel Kwarteng Memorial Scholarship.

There will be race day registration. Participants will need to arrive approximately one hour before the race to register for the event. T-shirts sizes cannot be guaranteed for race day registers. We are unable to accept cash on raceday! Payment will be made via QR code link.

  • All participants receive a race bib and custom race shirt!

T-shirts guaranteed to runners registered before April 10th. We will order extra t-shirts for those who register after that date, but it is not guaranteed. Must attend packet pickup or race to pick up shirt.

Race Distances & Details

This is a self-timed race. Participants are responsible for tracking their own start and finish times.

πŸ… 5K (3.1 miles) – Ideal for beginners, casual runners, and walkers looking to support the cause.

πŸ… 10K (6.2 miles) – Ideal for more experienced runners looking to support the cause.

πŸ“Œ Parking & Restrooms

  • Parking Lot: There is a small designated parking lot at the trailhead entrance. It is free and first-come, first-served.

  • Overflow Parking: If the lot is full, you can use nearby street parking on East Abingdon Drive or Slaters Lane, both within walking distance. Be sure to check signs for time restrictions.

πŸ“Œ Packet Pickup & Check-In

  • Begins at 8:15 AM at the trail start. Must pick up packet and sign waiver before participating in event. The race will start promptly at 9 AM. We recommend arriving at least one hour early to allow ample time for parking, check-in, and warm-up.

  • A bag drop will be located near the start/finish line where participants may leave items. Items are left at your own risk.

πŸ“Œ Inclement Weather Policy

  • In case of severe weather, we will email registered runners and post updates on social media regarding cancellations. Otherwise, assume the race is happening as scheduled!

 

5K Route Narrative

Start Line: The event begins at Mile 0 of the Mount Vernon Trail, located near the Mount Vernon Estate entrance and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Start to Cedar Knoll: Participants head north along the Mount Vernon Trail, following the paved path that runs parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway with scenic views of the Potomac River.

Turnaround Point: The turnaround is located at Cedar Knoll , clearly marked along the trail inside Fort Hunt Park. Volunteers and signage will indicate the turnaround location.

Return Leg: After making the turnaround at Cedar Knoll, participants retrace their steps, heading south along the Mount Vernon Trail back toward the start.

Finish Line: The route concludes back at Mile 0 Trailhead, where participants will cross the same point they started from.

πŸ“ Distance: The out-and-back route covers approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

10K Route Narrative

Return Leg: After making the turnaround at Collingwood Picnic Area, participants retrace their steps, heading south along the Mount Vernon Trail back toward the start.

Finish Line: The route concludes back at Mile 0 Trailhead, where participants will cross the same point they started from.
